Lees Hall Golf Club
Lees Hall Golf Club was established in 1907 thanks to a casual remark during a conversation by two Sheffield business men, the late Mr JW Hyde and the late Mr JW Larder, suggesting that the day would be better for a game of golf. The following Sunday morning they prospected land above Lees Hall, and approached the occupier with their suggestion to create a golf course. An agreement was reached and a nominal rent of £5 per annum was asked.
The layout of a initial 9 hole course was commissioned from George Cawkwell, the then Hallamshire Golf Club professional, at a length of just 1775 yards.
The year 1910 brought further additions to the course, making 14 holes from the 18 hole plan submitted by Alex Herd, who was the Open Champion in 1902. Many old members still refer to the present 11th hole as “Herd’s mashie”. The following year the course became a full 18 holes and various parts of land were purchased.
By July 1920 the majority of the land comprising the course was purchased. Soon most of the land occupied by the present course became property of the club, including Sheephill Farm, which was renovated and altered to become the Clubhouse on today’s site.
Many changes have taken place since the early days, and with the fine club spirit which exists amongst its members and staff, the Club has every justification for looking forward to many happy golfing days in the future.
